US Westward Expansion Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
During the expansion out West the natural environment barely impacted the development of the West but did significantly shaped the lives of those who lived there.
The natural environment affected the expansion by the difficulty the trip itself out there, the mode of transportation in the wagon trains, and the climate. Lewis and Clark set out in 1804 to try and map the territory in the lower part of the West. The trip there was left up to the individual family or wagon train. Most of the area that they went through was often unmarked and unmapped territory. The Oregon Trail was a popular route used to get into the West.
The settlers that made it to the West experienced many hardships such as disease, lack of food, and attacks by Indians. The Indians controlled much of the West and were not pleased when white settlers slowly encroached on their land. Feuds between settlers and Indians also sparked from the massive hunting of buffalo, their lively hood.
