In American culture we live by gender codes. In our culture men are supposed to be masculine and women are supposed to be feminine. Men are thought to be warriors; they are risk takers and the ones with ideas. On the other hand women are thought to be passive, humble, and vulnerable. Generally, this is how gender is divided, but no one person is just feminine or just masculine. For example Oprah Winfrey is both masculine and feminine. She is masculine because she is an entrepreneur and had to overcome adversity to reach her status, yet she is very feminine in how she dresses and acts. Since she is a public figure in our nation she has to appeal to the gender codes to be accepted as a normal woman. So although Oprah is masculine, she is able to retain her viewer ship because she appears to be feminine.
