Nearly one million young women under twenty become pregnant each year, which averages out to about twenty eight hundred teens getting pregnant each day. But why so many pregnancies when there are numerous contraceptives out there to be used? According to a 2001 survey amongst sexually active young women, 9 in 10 use some form of contraceptive but only 6 out of 10 of them choose to use the pill as their birth control method. Most teens surveyed said they would choose the pill over any other method if it were more convenient to get. The preferred pill would be used by more teens if it werent so hard to get because it has various uses besides the prevention of pregnancy and it is a private contraceptive.
The pill is mostly always free at local teen clinics, but requires a prescription to get it. Teens must make appointments or get check-ups and wait for prescriptions in order to obtain it, and that takes up a lot of time.
