The Outcasts of Poker Flat
Bret Harte was born on 1836 in Albany, New York. He developed an
interest in Literature when he was young. He moved to San Francisco in 1854, he
had many jobs that gave him an opportunity to observe Gold Rush era and the
Frontier Life. In 1868, he became the editor of `Overland Monthly` where he
published his famous stories such as `The Outcasts of Poker Flat`.
This story took place on November of 1850, in the town of Poker Flat
,California. It was the Gold Rush era, gold was found in California and hundreds of
thousands people were moving there. Since the Louisiana Purchase (1803), it was
the manifest destiny of Americans to move west. First uttered by John L.O`Sullivan
on 1839, manifest destiny was: the belief that it was God's will for the nation to
expand across the continent. Discovery of Gold in California was a very important
factor for Americans to fulfill their Manifest Destiny by moving to west. This
