The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) a battle cruiser was commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on November 15, 1932. Throughout most of her early peacetime service she served as Flagship of Scouting Force, US Fleet. At one point she was even chosen by President Roosevelt as his “Ship of State”, which served as his personal transport for transatlantic and South American travels. In April 1940 the US Fleet was moved from the West Coast to Pearl Harbor because of rising tensions in the Pacific. Fortunately for the USS Indianapolis and conveniently all other carriers they were not in their homeport when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. On the morning of March 31, 1945 while participating in the battle for Okinawa a Japanese Kamikaze plane was hit by antiaircraft fire and crashed into the port side of the ship. The bomb that the plane released just before crashing caused the ship the most damage. April of 1945 she arrived in California for extensive repairs in dry-dock. Indianapolis received the most up-to-date equipment the Navy had available.......
