Setting plays a very important roll in William Shakespeare’s Othello. The first act of the play takes place in Venice. As the Third Gentleman in Act II, Scene I, page 21 says: “That their department halts: a noble ship of Venice Hath seen a grievous wreck and sufferance On most part of their fleet.” Venice is a city in northern Italy along the Adriatic Sea. It is well known for the canals that are built in the city. Acts II-V take place in Cyprus. Cyprus is an island country in the Mediterranean, south of Turkey. In Act II, Scene I, page 26, Othello says: “Does challenge much respect. Come, Desdemona, Once more well met at Cyprus.” There are several reasons Shakespeare set the play in Venice and Cyprus. In Shakespeare’s time, the English considered Italians to have loose morals. When playwrights of the day wanted to portray wickedness, they often created Italian characters causing problems in England, or set the plays in Italy.
