When the play begins it seems clear that Benedick and Beatrice have a great disliking for one another due to their seemingly playful but sometimes venomous digs towards each other. This first becomes noticeable when the messenger reports news from the recent battle concerning some of the more established figures in society. He mentions Don Pedro and talks of young Claudio’s bravery, before Beatrice mockingly asks about Benedick. The messenger tells her that he is stuffed with all honourable virtues, to which she replies, “It is so, indeed; he is no less than a stuffed man” This is one of several mocking remarks Beatrice makes to the messenger regarding Benedick, giving the impression that there is no love lost between the two. This idea is confirmed when Leonato, Beatrice’s uncle, tells the messenger that ‘there is a kind of merry war betwixt Signor Benedick and her’ This is also evident in the first act when Benedick and Beatrice have a confrontation in full view of everyone and exchange various insults, for example, Benedick tells her, “Well, you are a rare parr......
