As an advocate of socialism, Griffiths despised the seemingly corrupt nature of capitalism. This attitude is displayed in his play Comedians through the character of Challenor. One of Challenors rules of comedy is You dont have to love the people, but the people have to love you, which causes him to appear as though he feeds off the audience whilst giving them nothing in return. This characteristic is apparent throughout the entire script, yet on a deeper level it could be suggested that he does have some redeeming traits.
The opinions of the other characters are helpful in providing the reader with an idea of the nature of Challenor. Prices comment of If Challenor was on fire I wouldnt piss him out implies that he immediately comes across as being someone who is untrustworthy. However, Price symbolises Marxism, which is the political opposite of capitalism and so it his character is bound to be opposed to Challenor.
