Short Story By Rod Ditrich ENG215 Phase 1, Task 1, DB CTU Online The short story that I have chosen to recommend for the quarterly short story journal is The Tell-Tale Heart, by Edgar Allan Poe. This short story was first published in James Russell Lowell's The Pioneer in January 1843, and it appeared again in The Broadway Journal on August 23, 1845 (Womack, 2001). What drew me to this short story is that Poes extraordinary ability to bring the reader into the mind of the character in his stories. In The Tell Tale Heart Poe writes the story from the perspective of an insane, unnamed narrator. Poe doesnt even reveal if the narrator is a male or female (Classic Short Stories, 2006). In this tale, Poe begins the story with the narrator defending his or her sanity by describing how the disease sharpened his or her senses. Poe is successful in showing how an insane person is able to justify and rationalize their actions or thoughts to themselves to allow them to think or commit acts which a sane person could never do (Womack, 2001).
