Moral Decline The 1920’s marked the end of American innocence, and the beginning of corruption and deceit. Tom Buchanan, Daisy Buchanan, and Myrtle Wilson in particular show characteristics of a moral decay in society. Tom Buchanan uses lying, adultery, and chauvinism to show a decrease in the moral of the time. In the beginning of the story, Jordan Baker says, “Toms got some woman in New York.”(15). Tom is having an affair with a woman named Myrtle Wilson, which leads to another example of moral decay. At the New York city apartment party, Tom and Myrtle get into an argument, and Nick observes the whole thing. “Making a short, deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand.”(37). If Tom had any morals he would never hit a woman, or cheat on his wife. Daisy Buchanan wasn’t exactly a good girl either. Daisy also showed signs of the moral decay of American society. When she meets Gatsby again, they fall in love. Gatsby eventually approaches Tom saying that Daisy doesn’t love him, and Daisy agrees, “I never loved him.”(132). This shows a lack of ......
