Fluoridation being disputed is whether putting the element in our water supply a good or bad thing. Fluoridation is the addition of a fluorine compound to a drinking water supply for the purpose of reducing tooth decay. Water fluoridation became an issue when serious health concerns were thought to be caused from fluoride treated water such as cancer. In June the Environmental Working Group (EWG), petitioned the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to list fluoride in tap water as a carcinogen. The group cited decades of peer-review studies that fluoride may mutate an individuals DNA and possibly causing bone deficiency.
Those who favor fluoridation believe that Fluoride can reduce the incidence of dental caries and that fluoridation can assist in that protection. In the year 2001, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) studies have found that by the time children were reported than those in non-fluoridated areas.
