While Christopher wishes to give his story a tidy ending, this only reveals his blindness to the messy emotional lives of people around him. When the neighbor's (Mrs. Shears) dog Wellington is killed with a pitchfork, he thinks of it as a puzzle and math problem in hopes of understanding something that makes no sense to him. This begins a journey for Christopher that takes him places he never imagined, both physically and mentally. Discovering that his mother is not really dead and that his father in fact had killed Wellington encourages Christopher to follow the footsteps of his favorite character Sherlock Holms.
