X Marks the Spot In 1915, the United States sold 483 coins to people worth fifty dollars each. Today those coins sell for sixty-five thousand dollars per-coin (Heritage Galleries and Auctions). What if a rich guy were to drop one of those coins into the ocean while sailing on his yacht 80 years ago? Then it’s possible that one day you could be snorkeling somewhere and find a sixty-five thousand dollar coin. This scenario isn’t that farfetched; when Spain was colonizing Florida three different fleets of treasure ships sank to the ocean floor over a 100-year time span due to hurricanes. During the 1620’s-1730’s Spain would sail fleets of ships filled with gold, silver, emeralds, gemstones, coppers, pearls, and ivory for trade and to ship back to the King. But in 1622, 1715, and 1733 hurricanes managed to send fleets of ships to the sea floor (ADP). Naval battles have taken place for thousands of years going all the way back to ancient Egypt in what is now known as The Battle of the Nile in 1190 (I Cornealus).
