Women in Mathematics Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Florence Nightingale was not only a nurse, but she was also an amazing mathematician. She is remembered most for the work she did during the Crimean war and her contributions towards the reform of the sanitary conditions in military field hospitals. But what most people don’t know about Florence was her love of mathematics, especially statistics, and how this played an important part in her life’s work. Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820 at the Villa Colombia in Florence, Italy. Her parents enjoyed traveling, therefore she moved around quite a bit. The education of the Nightingale children had been left up to governesses, until their Cambridge educated father took over the responsibility. Florence loved learning and had a natural ability for studying. In 1840 Florence decided she wanted to study math. Although she begged her parents, they both disapproved and urged her to study subjects more appropriate for women. Florence must have been very stubborn, because she didn’t give up and after many battles with her parents they finally gave in and let her study ......
