ABSTRACT
For decades, international trade has been viewed as a major catalyst for economic growth and social development and various studies have shown strong correlation between trade and economic growth. To support and expand trade, new trade agreements have been promoted since it is believed that trade can be beneficial to developing countries. As a contrast, it is also believed that developing countries become more dependent on developed countries as a result of trade. But whatever the effect may be, it cannot be denied that in recent years trade has continued to expand in developing nations and therefore, it is necessary to gain an insight into whether trade has proved to be beneficial or not.
Countries such as the United States have strived to expand trade in poorer countries. For example, studies have shown that if the richer nations would eliminate trade barriers in apparel and agriculture, hundreds and millions of people could escape out from poverty (Weisbrot and Baker, 2002).
