The Bell Jar By: Sylvia Plath The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath, is about a young college student, Esther Greenwood, and her struggle with sanity. Esther is very bright and, even though the world continues to move around her, she seems trapped in her one bubble, like a bell jar. She cannot get out of it, although she did not try hard. She eventually gets the bell jar to lift, a litle bit at a time. Esther Greenwood, a college student from Massachusetts, gets selected to be one of the few college students to go to New York and participate in a fashion program. She travels to New York to work on a magazine for a month as a guest editor. She works for Jay Cee, a caring but demanding woman. Esther and eleven other college girls live in a women’s hotel. The sponsors of their trip wine and dine them and shower them with presents. Esther knows she should be having the time of her life, but she feels deadened. The execution of the Rosenbergs worries her, and she can embrace neither the rebellious attitude of her friend Doreen nor the perky conformism of her friend Betsy. After being ......
