The story Ghosts is from a series of plays in which author Henrik Ibsen criticizes the moral values, along with the everyday norms of the Norwegian society of the late 19th century. In that day and age, there was typically only one pastor or authoratative religious figure for every town; and that pastor also typically occupied an important social position in which he has a mass potential to persuade public opinion. For the current setting of the story, pastors generally were more concerned with cultivating a lifestyle that caused absolutely no imperfections to the society, and they would constantly infringe upon others personal lives with their convictions. Many people were easily confused about the differences between living a moral life and living a life that appears proper to the public eye, whether it means keeping skeletons in the closet or not.
Ghosts is a perfect example of a society that is absurdly too concerned with reputations and other such things that can inevitably cause a chain reaction of severe emotional damage to certain individuals. Mrs. Helena Alving......
