Arguments for American Expansion in the 1840s and 1890s Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The 1800s in America was a period of great expansion. More specifically, the 1840s and the 1890s both contained several important events relating to expansionism. The arguments in favor of expansion in these time periods were in fact very similar to each other, both using almost identical justifications for obtaining land. But on the contrary, the arguments against expansion in these time periods were very different. In the 1840s the opposition opposed the possible spread of slavery in the new territories, while in the 1890s the opposition was based more on imperialism and controlling both areas and people of different cultures that were farther away from America. The debate in favor of expansion in the 1840s and the 1890s was extremely similar in that there were virtually identical justifications for obtaining land. In the 1840s, James K. Polk was a strong advocate of Manifest Destiny, which was a concept stating that the U.S. was destined to expand across the continent and get as much land as possible. This resembled Darwin’s theory of Survival of the Fittest in the 1890s......
