In our society, we are constantly bombarded with advertisements. We do not do what every single one says, we do not even pay attention to all of them. People pay attention to advertisements selectively, based on what they identify with in the particular advertisement. In 2002 and 2003, Lotus Cars ran a series of advertisements in AutoWeek for its car, the Lotus Elise. Two of them are of particular interest. The advertisements ran one right after the other, combining their messages. The advertisement asks us to disobey one authority and instead follow the authority of the ad; in addition the ad claims to have universal appeal but in reality is targeted toward a specific group of people.
The second advertisement is clear in asking people to disobey speed limits. The visual seems to depict a Lotus Esprit turning at a high rate of speed. The text is even more suggestive.
