The Divine Wind Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The narrator tells the reader “this is a story about friendship” and that “friendship is a slippery notion.” How does the novel explore the slippery nature of friendships? The novel “The Devine Wind” by Gary Disher explores the slippery nature of friendships through many themes. The hard to define and ever-changing friendships in the novel are seen firstly from the impact of the war. Another major problem that changes the nature of friendships is racism and racial differences, which is evident in Mitsy’s and Alice’s connections. Jealousy plays a big part in relationship between Hart and Jamie, weakening their bond. A major cause that contributes to friendship being a ‘slippery notion’ is the war between the Japanese. Disher shows its disruptive effect on the lives of a number of individuals and their friendships. In the case of Mitsy and Hart, war plays a huge part in destroying their friendship. The courage that Hart displays by inviting Mitsy and her mother to take up residence slowly dissipates, although they have been friends since they were young. As the war go......
