The Weaknesses of the Weimar Republic Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Weimar Republic proclaimed on 9 November 1918 was born in the throes of military defeat and social revolution. In January 1919, a National Assembly was elected to draft a constitution. The new government, composed of members from the assembly, came to be known as the Weimar coalition. This new government included the SPD; The German Democratic Party and the Center Party. In February the assembly elected Frederick Ebert as the Republics first president.
Suffrage was universal. Thus, Germany had a truly democratic parliamentary system. However, the president had the right to dismiss the cabinet, dissolve the Reichstag and veto legislation. He could also temporarily suspend civil rights and call in the military for assistance (martial law). Article 48, the so called emergency clause, gave the president the right to allow the cabinet government to rule without the consent of the parliament whenever it was deemed essential to maintaining public order.
