The Alienation of Holden Caulfield Holden Caulfield is one of the most intriguing characters of Twentieth Century literature in the novel Catcher in the Rye. His attitude concerning class, gender, and sexuality all contribute to his alienation and allow the reader to get into his head. Contributing factors that lead to Holden’s alienation by way of class, gender, and sexuality are his hopelessness, the contradiction between his thoughts and actions, and his misunderstanding of how to talk to others. Holden has a distinct perspective on class. He is an upperclassman; his parents have quite a lot of money. He is isolated because he cannot relate to the middle and lower class. An important symbol that represents Holden being separated from others due to class is a suitcase. He mentions his old roommate at Elkton Hills, Dick Slagle, who had a cheap, old suitcase and would hide it under his bed so nobody would see it.
