Paul Kelly’s speakers portray their insecurities, pleasures, pain and confusions honestly within the lyrics of the songs, showing the fragility of a situation due to the erratic conduct of emotional humans. The lyrics prove that despite human frailty being most apparent in that of sexual relationships, this inherent weakness, to complicate life be it through jealousy and suspicion or through hastily formed ideas and actions, is present in all situations. Kelly’s narrators speak candidly about their problems in the lyrics of the songs. The narrator of Sweet Guy writes of her confusion about her violent boyfriend, asking, “What makes a sweet guy turn so mean?” The doubt and frustration of a woman who is being pleaded with by her boyfriend to take him back in I’ve been a fool is expressed most potently in the last verse where she pleads despairingly saying, “Have you really changed your spots at all? Baby don’t lie…I’ve been a fool” Both narrators explain their predicament and do not try to skirt over the main issues such as the domestic violence of Sweet Guy. They s......
