Reader-Response Criticism of Araby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Shelly Love Professor Fell English 1102 February, 8, 2006 Reader-Response Criticism of “Araby” “Araby” is a short story written by James Joyce which is narrated through the eyes of a young boy whose name is never mentioned. It becomes apparent that the story is probably a personal experience of the author himself. In the story, the narrator talks mainly about his youthful anguish between his feelings for Mangan’s sister. He has a confused mixture of sexual desire and sacred adoration for this girl, which is evident throughout the story. “Her dress swung as she moved her body and the soft rope of her hair tossed from side to side” (James, Joyce. “Araby”. Literature: Approaches to Fiction, Poetry, and Drama. 82). The boy also sees Mangan’s sister always surrounded by light, as if by a halo. He imagines that he can carry her image as a “chalice” (82). This would imply that he sees her as someone who is sacred, someone worthy of his worship. All his other sensations of life seemed to fade from his thoughts and he was aware only of his adoration of the ble......
