Power Structure In Cormiers Novel The Cartoonist Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Power structure within the school causes the student body to become brainwashed in Cormier’s novel The Chocolate War, as it causes them to accept manipulation between levels, rebellion against the rules for The Vigils , and negative leadership to stay authoritative. Manipulation between the levels of teachers, The Vigils and students is the first conflict with power structure within Trinity High School. Goober is told by The Vigils that he has to complete the room nineteen assignment. He is told to unscrew everything in Brother Eugene’s room, since everything is screwed in. He got strict orders from The Vigils not to completely take the screws out, but to leave them hanging (Cormier 35): ‘And here’s what you do Goober.” Pause. “You loosen”. “Loosen?” The Adam’s apple dancing. “Loosen...Everything in Brother Eugene’s room is held together by screws. The chairs, the desks, the blackboards’. The Vigils are basically the highest rank at Trinity. The teachers do not mention them because they accept the fact that they have a higher power,......
