Influence of the Canadian Fur Trade Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The fur trade was one of the key reasons Canadian settlement took place. Originally Canada was not settled except for seasonal fishers coming to the area for cod. What at first was an almost hostile environment between the seasonal fishers and the natives eventually changed to a closer relationship involving trade. The fishermen would give the Native people iron knives, cooking pots, and blankets made from cloth, in return, the Native people gave the fishermen the cloaks that they wore, made of animal furs. This was the beginning of the fur trade that influenced Canada in so many ways. As the trading with natives became much more common there was an increase in the demand of beaver pelts from the fisherman. The demand for beaver pelt drew more adventurers, explorers, and traders further into the area, and further from the fishermen and whalers. Two young men by the names of Radisson and Des Groseilliers began exploring the north, seeking fur for themselves, and sending the fur they got down to Montreal.
