In the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison, the past plays a major role in all the characters’ lives. So many things occurred from slavery to deaths that affect each character. The past is seen as a burden that everyone tries to forget. No one realizes that in order to move on with their futures, they must face the past and understand the messages the ghosts of the past is trying to tell them. The story takes place in Cincinnati, Ohio where Sethe the main character is an ex slave. She falls in love and marries another slave named Halle, and has four children. She has two boys and two girls. Before Halle tries to escape, he buys his mother, Baby Suggs’s freedom. Sethe tries to escape from slavery with her children and a few other slaves. Before they are able to escape Sethe gets raped and milk stolen from her breasts by the slave owners’ nephews. Sethe sends her children ahead of her to be with Baby Suggs in case they are caught from trying to escape.
