Too Much is Not Enough - The World State Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Perhaps Huxley’s astonishing atrocity of a society in Brave New World isn’t as far from the truth as we initially perceived. Similarities between the World State and our own societies are apparent, such as the concept of mass consumption. Consumption is as an integral part of our society as it is in the World State. Though the methods in which consumption is induced differ, the end desired result is the same. The World State uses hypnopaedic proverbs to certify that their citizens would support the economy, while industrialized nations today use an equivalent power: propaganda. Consumption maintains a nation’s economy, which in turn supports the nation’s politics. The World State exposes children to speakers that spout moral instructions on how to live their life. A large portion of these instructions encourage consumption. Hypnopaedic proverbs such as ‘Ending is better than mending,’ persuade citizens to discard old items instead of repairing them for new items. ‘I love new clothes,’ and ‘the more stitches the less riches,’ also have the same effect. ‘I do love flying......
