There are many underlying themes in David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. The major theme is the powerful abusing the weak. We can see many examples of powerful characters of the book, taking advantage of week ones, such as Uriah Heep when he finically ruins Mr. Micawber, within the traits of Mr. Creakle, Mr. Creakle and Uriah Heep in prison, and lastly the father of David. Mr. Creakle is the proprietor of Salem House, a school near Blackheath. This is the school which David is sent to. One David’s first day there, Mr. Creakle beats him with a cane. Mr Creakle exercises a tyrannical and sadistic style of discipline to the boys of the Salem House. “I should never think that there never can be a man who enjoyed his profession more than Mr. Creakle did. He had a delight in cutting at the boys, which was like satisfaction of a craving appetite.
