Interpretation Paper #1: Beauvoir, “The Second Sex” & Ibsen, “A Doll’s House”: In Beauvoir’s “The Second Sex,” she sets out a feminist existentialism that carries a major Freudian aspect. An existentialist herself, Beauvoir accepts the principle the existence precedes essence. Meaning, that one is not born a woman, yet becomes one. Her learning’s focus on the concept of “the other.” It is the “social” construction of the woman as the quintessential “Other” that Beauvoir identifies as fundamental to the women's domination. She also argues that women have historically been considered deviant and strange. She says that this type of attitude is what has limited women's success by maintaining the perception that they are a deviation from the norm, and are outsiders attempting to copy a sense of normality. For feminism to initially move forward, this assumption needs to be set aside.
