Lowering the Drinking Age to Eighteen Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Despite the fact that one must be twenty-one years of age in order to legally purchase alcohol, numerous underage college students still irresponsibly obtain and consume alcohol. One may observe a sharp decline in his or her grades due to binge drinking. Because parents protect their children, they come to college and find themselves unaware of how to handle the many freedoms that are presented to them. Drinking by these youth can be best described as an enticing “forbidden fruit,” a “badge of rebellion against authority” and a symbol of “adulthood” (Engs par 2). Take, for example, a young man or woman who was constantly pushed by his or her parents during high school. The young man or women is going to come to college and be the proverbial “kid in a candy store.” In the past, the nation has tried prohibition legislation twice in an attempt to control irresponsible drinking. Because there are many ways to acquire alcohol under the age of twenty-one, setting the legal age to drink at twenty-one is a frivolous concept that will in no way affect underage drinking.
