Renaissance artists Donatello and Michelangelo portrayed the Biblical figure of David using different media and artistic perspectives. Michelangelos massive 13 foot (434 centimeters) marble sculpture was completed nearly a century after Donatellos much smaller, 185 centimeter bronze statue. However, both Davids stand impressively and display similar formal characteristics. Michelangelos oversize David enables the artist to render such physical details as hands, feet, and genitals with incredible accuracy and precision. Although the size of Michelangelos statue makes his David more impressive and imposing than that of Donatellos, the latter nevertheless retains an intimate, almost childlike characteristic. The bronze medium, its darkness and its metallic starkness, draw the viewers attention even if it does not completely resemble human flesh. In contrast, the medium of marble and its almost flesh-like nature mimics the human physique more than bronze does.
