Passed in the weeks after September 11, 2001, the Patriot Act was designed to enhance federal anti-terrorism investigations. On December 31, 2005, sixteen controversial surveillance provisions in the Patriot Act were set to expire. The bill to renew the Patriot Act passed through the House without a hitch; however, the Senate rejected attempts to renew major provisions of the Patriot Act. This rejection was a result of civil liberty concerns, which dealt a serious blow to the Bush Administration. There are quite a few key controversies that are delaying the renewal of the Patriot Act including: information sharing, roving wiretaps (Abramson, 3), access to records and sneak and peek (Abramson, 4) search warrants. After a couple of months of extensions, the Patriot Act seems to be headed for long-term renewal. Key Senators have reached a deal with the White House that allays the civil liberties concerns of some critics and people who oppose the Patriot Act.
