The Life and Works of Carl Sandburg Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Carl Sandburg was a nationally renowned poet, biographer, lecturer, journalist, and folksinger. He won two Pulitzer prizes for his poetry works and his biography of Abraham Lincoln. He was known as the people’s poet and he passionately wrote for the everyday working person. Carl Sandburg was born on January 6, 1878 in Galesburg, Illinois. His parents were August and Clara Sandburg..1 He was their first son and second child.2 His parents were Swedish immigrants so he grew up speaking Swedish and English. He wanted to become more American so he began calling himself Charles instead of his Swedish name Carl.3 His parents had him confirmed at age thirteen because it was a Swedish custom but Carl never joined the Swedish-Lutheran church or any other church. He did not believe in any certain formal religion, he had his own beliefs.4 He had to leave school at the age of thirteen to work to help out his family.5 When Sandburg was eighteen he used his father’s railroad pass and traveled to Chicago.
