Book Response: The Promised Land Nicholas Lemann gives an exhaustive and up-close account of the great black migration and the government’s efforts to deal with it in this book. He shows how the chaotic Southern sharecropper life tended to translate itself in the Northern urban setting of Chicago, in the form of ghettoes. Interwoven with this story is the account of the federal government’s attempts to improve the lives of these migrants during the Kennedy and Johnson eras. Lemann really makes apparent the naiveté of the bureaucrats who were in charge of those well-meaning but mostly failed improvement programs, though he also reminds us that politicians always have their own agendas, and therefore often used the programs toward their own ends. While the main cause of the black migrants’ woes was, of course, white racism, Lemann is quick to point out that the lifestyle these people led was somewhat self-destructive, and certainly did nothing to improve their situations. In order to give a more intimate look into the lives of black migrants, Lemann follows the life of Ruby......
