Chbosky, Stephen, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. New York: Pocket Books, 1999. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is a story about a boy named Charlie, who is shy, intelligent, lonely and just starting high school.Before he starts high school his best friend commits suicide, so he doesn't have anybody to hang out with. As the school year kicks off, Charlie develops a special connection with his english teacher, Bill. As they talk about various things, Charlie brings up his problem with making friends. Bill tells Charlie to "get involved". Taking Bill's advice, Charlie goes to a football game and gets drawn to a group of friends who support his individuality and love for writing, music, and poetry. Throughout the book we get to see Charlie experience situations both good and bad. For example, he gets the opportunity to go to parties, dances, dates, learn about sex, homosexuality, friendship, loss, depression, and many more things.
