Introduction to Traumatic Brain Injury Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is defined as an external physical force to the brain, causing either total or partial functional disability in the areas of the brain affected. The damage can be a result of the head hitting a hard surface forcefully (closed injury) or by an object, such as a bullet, passing through the skull and piercing the brain (open injury). Closed injuries and open injuries are the different classifications of TBIs. The causes of TBI include car accidents, child abuse, falls, violent crimes, and sports injuries. Depending on the nature of the accident and the location of the injury, an individual is affected and rehabilitates in different ways. The following paragraphs will describe the different regions of the brain, problems that can occur, how an injury to the specific section affects movement, and ways to adapt activities based on the loss of function to that area.
