Romeo and Juliet - the dramatic significance of Act 1 Scene 5 Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Romeo and Juliet is a play by William Shakespeare concerning the fate of two young lovers who would do anything to be together. It is, perhaps, the most famous of his plays and undoubtedly the most famous love story in Western history. In this essay I am going to show that Act One Scene Five is one of importance in the play for many reasons, the first of which is because it is in this scene that Romeo and Juliet meet.
Shakespeare prepares for this scene by showing Romeo's infatuation with Rosaline, a character that never actually appears in the play. Benvolio encouraged Romeo to go to the Capulet's feast and accurately predicted that he would find other girls more attractive than Rosaline. This was highlighted when Benvolio said
Compare her face with one that I show, and I will make thee think thy swan a crow.
Similarly, we know that Juliet is there because Lord Capulet, her father, wants to give her prospective husband, Paris a chance to meet her - this is why he throws the party.
