The Mason-Dixon line is coined as the division line between the Pennsylvanian and Maryland border. For eighty years local surveyors made valiant efforts to attempt to lay the lines out, but later gave up and was deemed impossible to the Art of Man. Later, in 1763 two talented surveyors from England eventually started the survey. Their names were Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon.
In the early 1600s Sir George Calvert was awarded a tract of land, being described as from the South bank of the Potomac River to a point which lieth under the Fortieth degree of north latitude. (Danson, 11) George died 2 months prior to the grant and the new Baltimore granted the land to Calverts son and named it Maryland, after Henrietta Maria, queen of Charles I. In 1681 a grant for Pennsylvania was approved and
was read to be the territory west of New York and New Jersey and to the north of Maryland
and stipulated that the land would extend from the fortieth parallel, as far west as five degrees longitude from the Delaware River, and a circle to be drawne at 12 miles distance from Newcastl......
