Addiction is characterized by the repeated use of substances or behaviors in spite of serious consequences. Today our society faces the problem of different addictions, e.g. alcohol, drug, smoking, and Internet addiction It is not only a medical but also social problem because addicts are not able to be useful and valuable members of society. The reasons that people are so vulnerable to modern compulsions can be different. It might be genetic predisposition, environmental factors or physiological changes.
To start with, addiction may be caused by genetic predisposition.. Problems with drinking and drug use, just like heart disease or cancer, often run in families. Children whose parents are addicted to alcohol, for example, may be more likely than other people to have an alcohol or drug problem themselves.
