There is a nucleus at the centre of every atom containing one or more protons and neutrons, with one or more electrons forming a 'shell' or shells around it. Electrons are arranged around the nucleus in energy levels or shells. Atoms of different elements have different numbers of electrons in each shell, and may have different numbers of shells. The mass of an atom is due to that of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus. The Atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
