A View from the Bridge was written in 1955 by Arthur Miller. The genre is that of a modern tragedy, however the author uses the format and concepts of traditional Greek Tragedy used some two to three thousand years before its time. Greek Tragedy has a characteristic structure in which scenes of dialogue alternate with choral songs. This arrangement allows the chorus to comment in its song in a general way on what has been said and/or done in the previous scene. Most tragedies begin with an opening scene of explanatory dialogue or monologue called a prologue. However, a view from the bridge is not a Greek Play, and although it shares many similarities with that of Greek tragedy it does have its differences. Afieri takes on the role of the “chorus” but a View from the Bridge is not a musical and Alfieri does not sing. However, he does though comment on the action of the play scene by scene and even takes a vital part in the play, which is different to Greek tragedy, as traditionally the Greek chorus would not play a role in the play other than that of a chorus, narrator if you like. ......
