Critique of “The Picture of Reading: Deriving Meaning In Literacy Through Image.” From: The Reading Teacher, Volume 56, No. 2, October 2002. Joanna Capobianco Joseph Piro’s article entitled, “The Picture of Reading: Deriving Meaning Through Image,” focuses on the significance of training students not only to look at pictures but also to read it and then construct multiple meanings, hoping they will approach the picture just as they would a written text. Piro spotlights the importance and value of training students to "read" a painting and any visual image for that matter. “Because of early responses to picture books as a first reading experience, children do not think only in written language but in visual image as well. This helps them to cross over and discover meaning in nonverbal representations. By looking at pictures to determine how they communicate and elaborate a story’s message, children make a smooth transition from image to language” (Piro 2002).
