WOODSTOCK 1969 What were the feelings of society in America during the late 1960’s? Who were the movers and the shakers of those times? “Woodstock [came to symbolize] the unity of purpose among the swelling ranks of youth who opposed the war in Vietnam and hoped to assert their own power” (Szatmary 195). The system was an entity that baby boomers did not have faith nor trust in. Acid rock and the counter-culture it exemplified had been drawn into the competitive society it attacked. The psychedelic baby boomers, armed with flowers and well-meaning platitudes, would soon confront the M-1 rifles of National Guardsmen, who would turn the brightly colored hopes of hippiedom into a dark nightmare of war-torn campuses. The Woodstock generation had reached a dead end after a decade of hope for a better world. The Hippie movement was more than colorful clothing and long, unwashed hair. It was a world’s view and a state of mind. It was a lifestyle and philosophy that dominated the mainstream culture. All American’s with hopes of an improved way of life shared common ......
