Clairol Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Conforming to Survive in Society In the short story, Miss Clairol, by Helena Maria Viramontes we see how women may feel compelled to portray a certain image in order to satisfy society’s expectations. The setting takes place during the sixties. Women struggled to find their place in society because of racial discrimination but even more so due to proving their potential as women in a male-dominated society. Arlene, is a young mother of a ten year old daughter, Champ. It is evident that she is an unfit mother. Viramontes represents these characters through the use of characterization and symbols to show the challenges of a colored woman. “Arlene, wearing bell bottom jeans two sizes too small, can’t bend down to the Miss Clairol boxes, asks Champ.” Here, the writer uses characterization to present Arlene to the reader as a woman trying to be someone she is not. By wearing jeans too small, she portrays the image of a grown woman not wanting to act her age nor face her responsibilities as an adult. She reaches for the Clairol product because it’s a way for her to achiev......
