I never thought I would be diagnosed with an incurable disease. So imagine how shocked I was when the doctor entered the room and said ”the tests confirm you are in the beginning stages of Multiple Sclerosis. You are a text book case.” My husband and I were in a state of disbelief. We knew very little of the disease other than my aunt and sister-in-law also had MS, but functioned rather well. MS affects everyone differently so we were in for a rude awakening when me and my sister-in-law's condition started to worsen rather quickly. There are actually four types of MS; relapsing-remitting, primary-progressive, secondary-progressive, and progressive relapsing multiple sclerosis. Most people are diagnosed while in the relapsing-remitting disease stage as in my case. Aunt Ramona has primary-progressive, and Robin has secondary-progressive. Estimates show about 400,000 people in America have the disease. Generally the diagnosis is made when people are between the ages of 20 and 50 with two thirds being women.
