A Rose for Emily Loneliness and depression are the things that Miss Emily Grierson seemingly had an abundance of, and what she really needed was love and companionship. Miss Emily, having been reared on the higher end of society, people around town believed that, “the Griersons held themselves a little too high for what they really were. None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily” (Faulkner 33). Emily was a southern belle type lady that kept to her own self. She had a sweetheart that the people of the town were sure would marry her. Miss Emily lived with her father. Her father passed away and, in her despair, Miss Emily denied her father’s death. For three days Miss Emily told others that her father was not dead. After the three days, she finally allowed local law-enforcement and his doctor to come in and take his body. Miss Emily simply did not want to let her father go. The town quickly buried the body, and her boyfriend abandoned her a short time later. This was a double whammy for poor Miss Emily’s life.
