Authoritative Parenting Style
Given that my parents gave me a clear understanding of what was expected of me and were very supportive throughout my entire development, I would identify their parenting style as authoritative. Authoritative parents are both demanding and supportive. "They monitor and impart clear standards for their childrens conduct. They are assertive, but not intrusive and restrictive. Their disciplinary methods are supportive, rather than punitive. They want their children to be assertive as well as socially responsible, and self-regulated as well as cooperative" (Baumrind, 1991). Parents that utilize the authoritative parenting style work hard to communicate openly with their children at all times. They also work hard to maintain their authority in the eyes of their children in order for the children to respect the parenting decisions that are made. Authoritative parents expect mature behavior from their children, and dont make compromises to that end.
