The Intercultural Aspects of Invisible Man Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison tells the story of a young, college-educated black man working to survive and succeed in pre-Civil Rights era America. A novel told as a first-person narrative, Invisible Man traces the nameless narrator’s physical and psychological journey from being socially blind and lacking self image to aware through a series of reflective flashbacks of his life through dreams and memories. The novel begins in Greenwood, South Carolina, but the latter and majority of its happenings take place in Harlem, New York. Invisible Man is 568 pages published by Random House in 1952. To start the narrator speaks to his readers from his underground hideout in the basement in a whites-only apartment building. He recounts hid life as an “invisible man.” In his 40’s, he remembers when he was a naïve young man, anxious to become an honored speaker and professor.
