Gender and Sexuality Roles in Violence
The short stories The Curse by Andre Dubus, Like a Winding Sheet by Ann Petry, and the poem Kindness by Gabriel Spera, illustrate acts of violence by men toward women. The Curse is about a bartender, Mitchell Hayes, who witnesses a rape by five men and feels guilty about the fact that he could have done more to prevent the rape from occurring, despite his family and friends telling him he did the right thing. Kindness involves a group of guys who vandalize a car, and then return to beat up the boyfriends of two couples, and then rape the girls. Like a Winding Sheet is a story involving a black man, Johnson, who has a tough day at work and experiences a series of unfortunate events on his way home, which causes him to build suppressed rage and anger. He later comes home and releases his fury towards his wife by beating her. These three works portray how gender and sexuality play a role in acts of violence.
